Cultural Events,  Community Appeal

MACCA’s cultural events have community appeal, and impact. From fundraising to awareness our events are fun, entertaining, and done in true Caribbean style. Check out our monthly Calendar for the latest updates about what we’re planning here at MACCA.

MACCA Annual Scholarship Awards Gala

Our signature event is our Annual Scholarship Awards Gala and presentation, where we present scholarships to students in York Region demonstrating academic excellence and outstanding community engagement. Since our inception, we have provided 325 scholarships to the brightest students of African/Caribbean descent in York Region valued at over 300,000. Learn more about the scholarship here.

Black History Month Celebration

We host an Annual Black History Month Show in partnership with the City of Markham where we have honoured and awarded hundreds of black Ontarians making a difference in York Region. As part of our 10 year plan to focus on STEAM, we have themed our BHM program on Black Innovation. Over 200 children from across the York Region come to see community leaders receive awards. They also see their peers showcasing STEAM related projects and experiments and feature a local trailblazer in the area of science & technology.

Design your Future Black Youth Legacy Conference

Our annual Black youth empowerment conference is now being funded by the Canadian Heritage Anti-Racism strategy. In partnership with YouthRex, the event encourages young people towards community engagement using a design thinking model. Youth are engaged in a community based hack-a-thon to problem solve challenges facing young people.

In 2020, we launched our Design your Future Summer Internship. Participants at the conference will apply for the opportunity to pitch ideas to a group of committed community mentors, receive meaningful feedback to develop strong proposals which will be shared with stakeholders across the GTA.
